Terrazzo floor tiles - Tips for laying

USUAL LAYING METHOD

Prepare the substrate mortar with a mixture of cement, lime and sand. Spread a layer of cement grout either on the mortar or on the underside of the tile to help anchorage and then nudge the tile with a rubber mallet while laying.
The floor must not be trod on for a few days (at least 7).

LAYING WITH ADHESIVE

Prepare a well finished, level base course. Leave it to cure for two weeks and then lay the tiles using a suitable adhesive for marble and agglomerates (we suggest using MAPEI’s Granirapid). Use a toothed spatula and rubber mallet for laying.

7 days from laying the tiles using either method, wet the floor and stucco it with cement grout and marble powder, ensuring these penetrate right down between the tiles.

Suggestions after laying

If carpenters and plumbers have to work on the floor, protect it with waterproof cloths.  Grease stains etc., cannot be removed by grinding. 15-20 days after laying, use grinding wheels to smooth the surface. First apply the stucco and polish with some finer grained wheels and then level the floor for polishing. Leave the floor to dry thoroughly without covering it and only then wax it. To clean, use water and mild soap and, if wanted, mild liquid wax products. Under no circumstances use any detergents or abrasive/oily detergents.

Tips for treatment

To ensure a perfect marble-chip floor, it is must be treated after laying and polishing. This easy-to-apply treatment renders the floor almost 100% proof to oil and water without altering its appearance.

Treatment of internal terrazzo tiled floors

GLOSSY

Initial wash
To remove building site residues and dirt wash with FILACLEANER diluted with water (1:10). Spread the solution over the surface with a single-disk polisher fitted with a white disk or cloth. Collect the dirt using a cloth or wet/dry vacuum drier, then rinse with clean water.

Waterproofing
Apply a coat of HYDROREP to a perfectly dry surface. Apply a coat of FILOFOB after approximately 24 hours. Remove any product residue with a cloth Once the surface is thoroughly dry.

Upkeep
Wash the surface with FILACLEANER (diluted 1:200). The floor can be waxed with FILACLASSIC if it starts to loose its original shine. To restore any lost shine and remove streaks and marks, polish the entire surface or only the affected areas. Periodically apply a coat of FILASATIN (2-3 cups in 3 litres of water) to the clean floor surface to revive the wax layer.

POLISHED AND AGED

Initial wash
Wash with FILACLEANER (diluted 1:10 in water). Thoroughly clean the surface with a cloth or a single-disk polisher fitted with a white disk. You can also use DETERDEK (diluted 1:10 or higher) in the case of aged materials. Collect the dirt with a cloth or a wet/dry vacuum drier and then rinse with clean water.

Waterproofing
Apply a coat of HYDROREP to a perfectly dry surface. Apply a coat of FILOFOB after approximately 24 hours. Allow the floor to dry and then apply a coat of undiluted FILASATIN. Remove any product residue with a cloth Once the surface is thoroughly dry. If you want to increase the gloss, wait for the wax to dry before polishing the surface.
